Scoffing at HerbsScoffing at Herbs

Some heretics have even scoffed at herb garden gatherers as equally vague but benevolent old gentlemen with glasses, an umbrella, and the unquenchable optimism of the visionary who thinks all plants are good for something if we only knew what, decorating their garden with wind chimes, various bird attracting feeders and houses, and the like. This optimism has led to some very old fallacies, and the literature of container herb gardening is crammed with irrelevant plants once thought to be useful, but in fact serve only as garden decorations, if that. Even some modern herb websites are quite brazenly padded with species long since discredited holdovers from the days when fearsome potions were brewed from herbs, insects, garden snakes, putrid birds, and other horrors, upon the theory that such foul concoctions were good for everything from the King's evil to stunting the growth of birds.
